Hot Summer Days

May 30, 2009

Is it really going to be in the low 90’s every day this week?!?  Seriously?!?  It’s ONLY May!  Fortunately, Grace got a sprinkler (thank you, Pecks!) for her birthday, so we’ve been cooling off with that every chance we get.  Tonight we played in the sprinkler and BBQ’d.  The only thing that would have made it better would have been eating outside, but that wasn’t possible.  After the grilling process we were all drenched in sweat and ready to head back in to the AC!

In a few weeks we head to Kansas City and Illinois to visit family.  I can’t wait for “cooler” weather.  Last year when we visited the Midwest in June, I wore jeans the whole time and was cold!  Everyone made fun of me, but I have thin Texas blood now.  🙂

Grace: “I want you ever and ever”

Alyssa: “Bebe” (belly) and patted her belly (enjoying being naked) & “Beff!” (we were looking at pictures of family members and she said this when I said “Jeff”)  Uncle Jeff was pretty excited about this one!!

I think Alyssa is a little closer to walking.  She took more steps and walked around the house by just holding one of my hands.  Come on, girl!!

Last day of Dragonfly School

Last day of Dragonfly School

Today was Grace’s final day of Dragonfly School.  They were to dress up and of course she chose her tutu, tiara, and high heels.  What a girly girl!  🙂  She has loved Dragonfly School.  Miss Vicki & Miss Laurie (a friend of mine) asked her to join the school because they only had one autistic boy in the preschool (2 others could no longer come).  So, Grace and Samuel (Laurie’s son) went to help model “normal” language and behavior.  The summer session of Dragonfly School is full, so they won’t need Grace and Samuel to come anymore.  Fortunately, we’ll be traveling a lot, so I’m hoping Grace won’t notice the lack of school on Thursday mornings!  🙂

Alyssa blossoms more and more every day.  We LOVE to watch her personality develop (she has a lot of it!!).  The other day Matt said, “I love her personality – it’s awesome!”  I love it too, but I think it will come back to haunt us when she’s 13!  🙂  She’s very opinionated, spunky, and HILARIOUS!  Alyssa has the best facial expressions, sound effects, and dance moves.  Every day she attempts to say another word.  The word of the day today…”gug”…most of us would say “hug.”  I gave Alyssa a big hug and said, “HUG!”  She smiled really big, said “gug” and leaned into me.  LOVE IT!!!

When it comes to my girls, my 3 favorite things are…hearing “mama” (Alyssa) or “mom” (Grace), getting kisses (even if they are open-mouth ones from Alyssa!), and “gugs.”

Grace’s new “do”

4 braids & 4 hairbows

4 braids & 4 hairbows

Yesterday was another kid “swap” day with the Zimels.  Amber-Rose needed to stay around her house to wait for a repair man, so she watched my girls.  While I was out enjoying quiet time at a coffee shop and shopping for new clothes, AR was giving Grace the hairstyle of a lifetime! (Grace asked AR to do this!!)  After we got home, she wanted to add her new hairbows to the braids.  (What do you think about the addition, Amber-Rose?!?!)  🙂  She thought she looked fabulous.

I love watching her delight in girly things.

I’ve been wanting to re-decorate the girls’ bathroom for awhile.  I’m really sick of our navy blue towels that are in both bathrooms and needed a brighter change with more color.  So, I used some money we made at our garage sale to buy new towels and towel hooks.  The towels I got from Target (love that place!!) and the hooks I bought in Canton, TX, at the monthly flee market.  I painted them brown (they were a variety of colors).

Take a look…

Rudy’s is one of our favorite places to eat in Austin.  We love the BBQ, the atmosphere, and the cream corn!  Best of all, our kids love it too!

I took the girls there tonight and we had a great time.  It had the potential to be a catastrophe.  I ordered Cutter’s Choice Brisket and cream corn.  The guy behind the counter had the nerve to tell me they were out of cream corn!  What?!?  Is that possible?  Rudy’s without cream corn?  I almost cancelled my order and left.  Then, he found two small containers (I ordered a medium) – the LAST ones!!!  SUCCESS!!  And, he only charged me for one of them.  Then, he accidentally gave me a drink cup twice (I ordered 1 drink).  When I pointed this out he said, “Oh, whoops!  Just keep both of them.”  HOORAY!  That means I got to drink sweet tea AND diet Coke!  I think he just felt really sorry for me because I was by myself with two kids.  🙂

We sat at a table by the door just inside the outside eating area.  Alyssa was in a high chair at the end of the table and would try to talk to everyone walking by (it was very crowded tonight!).  She would get so mad when people wouldn’t respond to her.  It was cracking me up.  Grace was very quiet during dinner.  She mainly chowed on the cream corn and pickles.

One more thing to “report”…while we were eating, it started to rain.  We could actually see that it was raining in half the parking lot and dry in the other half – weird!  Unfortunately, we parked in the half that was raining!!!

Last Tuesday was my birthday (thank you to all of you who sent wishes)!!  It was a fantastic day!  My friend and I “swap” kids every Tuesday morning and my birthday happened to be my day to drop the girls off at her house for the morning.  When I arrived, she told me that something came up and I needed to be back by noon (normally we can stay out until 1ish).  I thought this was odd, but stuff happens.  On the way back to her house, I got in the wrong lane and was forced to turn left when I wanted to go straight.  I had to take a round-about way to her house, which made me 5 minutes late.  As I walked into the house, I was apolgizing all over the place.  Then, as I walked into the living room, I saw Matt and another friend.  Matt had e-mailed several of my friends to take me to lunch and he watched the kids!!  What a guy!!!

That afternoon, a friend and her son came over to play.  They watched the American Idol finale with us and stayed the night while Matt and I ate dinner at Z Tejas and sat on the deck!  What a fabulous birthday!!!

This weekend the girls and I flew to Tulsa for my cousin’s high school graduation.  My mom’s side of the family only gets together once a year (Christmas), but we thoroughly enjoy any additional times together!  So, we met my parents in Tulsa and spent 3 days there.  I was a little apprehensive about staying in a hotel room with my parents and the girls.  I was afraid it would be hard to get them down for bed and naps.  But, we just kept them up until midnight and then we had no trouble at all!  🙂

Matt is in Kentucky at his cousin’s wedding, which is going on right now!  He flies back tomorrow morning and has the day off.  So, we’ll get a good day of family time after being apart for a few days.  Our plans (as of now) are to grill.  We’ll see what else happens.

Matt’s sister was induced on Friday and had Bennett Alexander Saturday morning at 2:26 am!!!  She was in labor for a long time and her husband sent text messages throughout the day and night to keep us up-to-date.  I’ve seen pictures, but we won’t get to meet him until June 12th when we make a trip to KC, Columbia, and IL.  I’ll post pics once we meet him!  Right now I think he looks JUST LIKE his daddy!  But, as we know from both of our girls, that can change.  When Alyssa was born, she looked exactly like me.  Now, she’s a spitting image of Matt.  It’s crazy how that happens!

1st Birthdays

May 14, 2009

I enjoy seeing the similarities (and differences) in our girls’ personalities and looks.  Here’s a look at pictures from their 1st birthday parties.  Same “pose,” but different in their features.  Do you agree?

Grace knows another Bible verse.  She’s up to 10 verses.  The newest one…

“Therefore go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.  And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”  Matthew 28:19-20

Can you believe it?  That’s a stinking long verse!  And she’s 3!  In the words of Nana, “It’s humbling.”  She’s 3 and knows more Scripture than I did until I taught her these verses!  She’s amazing.  The part that really awes me is that she is constantly singing these verses.  What great words to hear coming from her mouth!

Alyssa changes every day!  Literally!  She is a TALKER – especially when she’s in the car – she constantly babbles.  Here are the words she’s saying… (in quotations are how she pronounces it)

uh-oh, dog “da”, Dad, Mom “mama”, banana “nana”, Alyssa “uh-yi-ss-uh”

if I say, “What does a monkey say?”  She says, “oo oo oo”

if I say, “What does a dog say?”  She says, “foof foof”

She’s a little obsessed with Daddy right now.  If he leaves the room she says, “Dad Dad Dad” over and over.  Last night he was rocking her while she was drinking her milk.  She took the cup out of her mouth, looked up at Matt, and said, “DAD!”  She also freaks out when he’s on TV saying “Dad Dad Dad” over and over.  It’s hilarious.

Her most recent accomplishment is taking FIVE steps this afternoon!  Her form was way better than it was yesterday, so I think she’ll be an official walker in a matter of days.  I’m thrilled!!!

It’s been awhile

May 3, 2009

I can’t believe how long it has been since I’ve written on this blog!  My apologies!  Instead of trying to catch you up on the past few weeks, I’ll just tell you about our weekend.

Yesterday morning we had a garage sale with some friends at our house.  Between the two families, we made $250!  Not bad for a few hours of work!!  We were tired by 1 o’clock when we shut it down.  Thankfully, I was able to sleep a little bit while the girls napped.

We had a coupon for a free Dominos pizza, so we had a picnic in our front yard.  It was so much fun!  Alyssa actually sat still the entire time!!  Tonight we grilled hamburgers on the grill in our driveway.  Then we set up our cardtable and ate by the grill.  We love eating outside – especially in the front yard.  It allows us to interact with our neighbors and enjoy the nice (although muggy) weather.

Matt has been “Mr. Project” this weekend.  He’s gotten many things checked off his “honey do” list.  Grace has enjoyed helping him with a few of these projects.  Fortunately, Matt is a very patient man and doesn’t mind his projects taking longer.  🙂

I did some yard work today.  It’s hard to “weed” landscaping that you didn’t do.  I had trouble distinguishing between what will be flowers or plants and what are weeds.  So, I just pulled what looked a little “unruly” and we’ll see what happens.  I may have to plant some things to fill in holes.

Overall it was a great weekend.  Lots of family time and fun times.  I feel refreshed and ready to tackle another week.  We’re going to have to break out Grace’s new sprinkler because it’s going to be in the 90’s all week!  Yikes!
